Croft: We’ve got to work our way out of our frustrating beginning
A DISMAL start to the season has left Glamorgan already looking at a long summer ahead and head coach Robert Croft believes the county must pull together to turn things round, starting against Leicestershire today.
Glamorgan were thumped by an innings and 22 runs by Northamptonshire in their opening fixture of the County Championship Division 2 season and were soundly beaten by eight wickets against Worcestershire last time out.
And coach Croft admits there is deep frustration at the poor results but wants his team to feed on the negativity moving forward.
“It is frustrating for everybody,”
said Croft. “There is a group of players that are very disappointed, as a support staff we are, and I am sure every supporter that follows Glamorgan is.
“It is certainly not the start that we envisaged, imagined or hoped for, but it is where we find ourselves.
“The crucial thing is as a squad, and I include support staff and players in that, is we work our way out of it.
“And when we work our way out of it, we remember how it feels so we don’t go back there.”
Leicestershire have suffered a similarly disappointing start to the 2017 campaign.
The Foxes, who had a more positive season in 2016 in comparison to the few years previous, were swept aside by Nottinghamshire in their opening fixture as a second innings collapse – all out for 81 – led to a ten-wicket loss.
They followed up defeat with another as they again lost by a big margin – Gloucestershire were victorious by an innings.
Neither side has been performing with the willow so far this season, with Leicestershire’s mediocre 259 in their first innings against Gloucestershire the best batting performance by either outfit in their eight combined innings this term.
But due to their point deductions, Glamorgan sit 15 points clear of their rivals, who are still in the red. That means the hosts have a chance here to get into the positive and climb above their visitors.
