VERDICT

-

Having missed out last year when only one team went up, Kent look well equipped to return to the top flight for the first time since 2010.

They have a resilient batting line-up, led by the outstanding Sam Northeast, whose 173 must have impressed watching England selector Andy Flower. The Kent captain must be a contender for any vacancy in England’s middle order this summer.

Their seam attack were relentless against Sussex with Darren Stevens, a few days shy of his 41st birthday, rolling back the years as he claimed the 14th first-class five-for. If they can keep their bowlers fit, Kent can stay the pace.

Defeat was a setback for Sussex, but certainly not one they should dwell on.

Vernon Philander is unlikely to be able to complete his short stint with them because of a groin injury but Steve Magoffin will be fit to return against Notts at Trent Bridge today.

Indeed, fast bowling is an area where Sussex have enviable resources and in Jofra Archer, who took seven wickets against Kent, they have a precocious talent.

Their main concern is a brittle-looking top order. Both Luke Wells and Matt Machan are injured so the signing of Leicestershire opener Angus Robson is shrewd. Robson underperformed last season but ought to be reinvigorated by the move.
