The Cricket Paper

Go back to basics

-

GRAHAMOtway’s article interviewing Dave Burton ( The Cricket Paper, June 16), a member of the Richmond CC coaching team, threw up an interesting view when he suggested that youngsters need to learn the basic shots before attempting shots they have seen on TV.

I would wholeheartedly agree.

However, on reflection, with the seemingly unstoppable march led by the administrators that 20/20 is the be-all and end-all, it is not at all unreasonable to expect the coaching book Dave works with to be set aside in a few years.

A youngster seeking the rich pickings the worldwide 20/20 competitions bring could be advised to ditch the traditional basics and concentrate on ramps, reverse sweeps and the like. Progress I assume! MARK JEFFERY,
