Real wages squeeze hits high street in Oc­to­ber

Bri­tish shop­pers spent less on the high street in Oc­to­ber, as the squeeze on real wages con­tin­ued to pile pres­sure on re­tail­ers. Con­sumer spend­ing was down 2pc year on year in Oc­to­ber, ac­cord­ing to pay­ment firm Visa. It marked the fifth fall in the past six months. Spend­ing on the high street fell 5pc. It comes as pay rises have not kept up with in­fla­tion.
