Drilling is starting at what may become the UK’s first deep geothermal power plant. Wells will be drilled 2.8 miles and 1.5 miles into granite in Cornwall, where the temperature can reach 392F, by Geothermal Engineering. Cold water will be pumped down and brought heated to the surface, and steam will drive turbines to power up to 3,000 homes. The £18m project near Redruth has received £10.6m from the EU, £2.4m from Cornwall Council and £5m from private investors.
