Why

The in­tense, deep royal blue flow­ers of ‘Lod­don Roy­al­ist’ are a treat. Se­lected by Thomas Carlile at Lod­don Nurs­eries in Berk­shire and in­tro­duced in the wake of the coro­na­tion, this va­ri­ety has stood the test of time. Deep blue flow­ers turn blue-pur­ple with age above mid-green leaves. Flow­ers as early as late May can con­tinue into Au­gust. Per­fect for pol­li­na­tors.

Where

This large blue alka­net makes a strik­ing state­ment in a sunny bor­der. The spires of for­get-menot like flow­ers can grow to 3ft (1m) so best mid-bor­der.

How

Dead­head af­ter flow­er­ing for a sec­ond flush. In early au­tumn cut stems back to the ground. Choose a well-drained spot.
