Loved by reviewers for its “white sand with a hint of red garnet, warm and clear water and no rocks at all”, this beach in south west Crete is definitely off the beaten track. Forget owning a property within a stroll of its pinkish sands and shallow turquoise lagoon; this Natura 2000 protected area is home to 110 plant species and little else.

Great for a day trip by boat or car, it is 45 miles from the old Venetian city of Chania, a good base from which to explore the other great beaches of western Crete (there are two in this top 10).
