THE VOICE KIDS
ITV, 7.25pm
Paloma Faith has been equivocal at best about her experiences as a coach on The Voice, but you can see why she might have been tempted back for the junior version of the talent show whose record of failure when it comes to creating a pop star is unblemished to an almost admirable degree. After all, The Voice Kids has charm and the “aaah factor” in abundance, and along with her fellow coaches – Pixie Lott, McFly’s Danny Jones and series mainstay will.i.am – Faith makes up an amiable quartet at its heart.
As the blind rounds begin, the contestants are a familiar grab-bag of comic turns and raw talents, several with the all-important inspirational life stories. But even so, a couple of performances are breathtakingly impressive, with 12-yearold Dara starting things off with a show-stopper, and 10-year-old rapper Ray Tee oozing stage presence and verbal dexterity as he takes on Skepta’s That’s Not Me. The endless uplift gets a touch wearying over 95 minutes and Jones’s never-ending astonishment that many children are quite, well, small, is peculiar, but for a chunk of uncomplicated inspiration it hits most of the right notes.
