The Ka Mate haka was writ­ten by one of New Zealand’s most fa­mous chiefs, Te Rau­paraha, af­ter his es­cape from an en­emy tribe in about 1820. His tribe, Ngati Toa, have given the All Blacks per­mis­sion to per­form it.
