England man marking

The Daily Telegraph - Rugby World Cup - - Sport Rugby World Cup 2015 - By Steve James at Twickenham

Mike Brown

9 Safe, incisive and outstanding. One poor early kick but then retrieved a bobbling ball in his own 22 before scoring an excellent try. Added another, too.

Anthony Watson

6 Wonderful early take in the air but was beaten by Nemani Nadolo for his try and could not return the favour in the second half. Tough night for him.

Jonathan Joseph

6 Wonderful hands on a few occasions, most notably for Mike Brown’s try, but some poor errors, too.

Brad Barritt

5 Did not do anything that appeared to alter matters majorly. Poor forward pass early in second half, then a silly block and a conceded turnover.

Jonny May

6 Lively and was upended nastily once. Did well in helping prevent Nikola Matawalu’s try but did not have the opportunity to break free.

George Ford

6 Was obvious that Fiji were trying to target him very early on. Other teams will do this. Never shirked the challenge, mind, but Owen Farrell is pushing him.

Ben Youngs

5 Really poor start, letting the kick-off bounce and a couple of poor passes, and never really found his form.

Joe Marler

6 Is he becoming a worry? Certainly does not appear to be the player of last year. Under a lot of pressure at the scrummage but did improve. Tom Youngs

6 Striking at the scrummage is still a problem. Controlled the driving line-out that led to the penalty try and was typically lively in the tackle and loose.

Dan Cole

6 Will be as worried as anyone about the scrummage. It is not necessarily his fault but he is the cornerstone. Not seen in the loose. Unusually lost his rag. Courtney Lawes

6 England need more from him, especially in terms of carrying. Lost one ball in contact but made a very good firsthalf turnover.

Geoff Parling

6 Did nothing wrong but his selection is becoming contentious. Fixes the line-out, but England lose bulk at the scrum and ability to turnover at breakdown.

Tom Wood

8 In good form. Has taken on board call to be more influential and not just simply work hard. Won the Fiji lineout on their own line that led to a Brown try.

Chris Robshaw

6 One of those performances that his critics would find it easy to criticise. Grafted hard but just did not have any significant influence.

Ben Morgan

5 Not at his best. Usually has good hands but they let him down on a couple of occasions here. One unnecessary pass out of the tackle. Replacements Rob Webber 5, Mako Vunipola 5, Kieran Brookes 7, Joe Launchbury 7, Billy Vunipola 7, Richard Wigglesworth 5, Owen Farrell 7, Sam Burgess 6
