Italy (13%, Waitrose, £9.74 down from £12.99 un­til Oct 30)

A Vene­tian red made by refer­ment­ing red wine with semi-dried grapes to bring ex­tra rich­ness and body, be­fore age­ing it in Slavo­nian and French oak. Think sour and dried cher­ries, and old side­boards with the slight­est hint of wood pol­ish. Gor­geous with au­tumn roasts.

BURRA BROOK MER­LOT 2017

Aus­tralia (13.5%, M&S, £7)

It’s not of­ten that we see a mer­lot makes it on to this page. Could the se­cret here be the fact that this par­tic­u­lar one is blended with nine per cent tem­pranillo, which brings a wel­come tweak to the fruity, rounded red? What­ever, you’ll find it a solid buy – at­trac­tive, re­as­sur­ing, and warm.

Beau­ti­fully creamy and fresh viog­nier with just a hint of peaches and hon­ey­suckle. Also a bar­gain.
