The grand (very) old duke…

He’s 96 today and has only just retired his blissfully gaffe-prone small talk. Happy birthday, Prince Philip

The Daily Telegraph - Telegraph Magazine - - WILDLIFE -

There aren’t many people who could say they were born seven years before the invention of sliced bread, but the Duke of edinburgh, who turns 96 today, is one of them. Born with the snappy title of Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, of the house of Schleswighol stein-son de rb ur gGlücks burg, he has accrued scores of honorary epithets – probably none finer than ‘Knight of the Order of the elephant’.

To most, though, he is affectionately just Phil the Greek, the Queen’s strength and stay for seven decades. and this year, after 22,191 solo engagements and 5,493 speeches (and roughly as many faux pas), he is finally taking a welldeserved sit down. It’s not a bad innings; let’s hope the courtiers can find enough candles for the cake. —
