NEW YORK, 1994 Cindy is an important artist and I find people like her fascinating. I chose her clothing for the shoot; if I hadn’t, it would have ended up looking like a self-portrait. Anyway, I knew she had a parrot and asked if we could do a shot with it. She said, ‘Sure, let me just put on some mascara.’ Then she explained if she put the parrot on her shoulder, and put mascara on, the parrot would eat the mascara from her eyelash. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this seems a bit dangerous,’ but that’s exactly what happened. She put the mascara on and the parrot ate it. And that was that!
