‘For my first col­lec­tion, my goal was to re­turn to the brand’s roots,’ says Francesco Fucci, who ar­rived at one of New York’s most un­der­stated houses, The­ory, from an­other, The Row, back in May. Af­ter five years work­ing be­hind the scenes as Marykate and Ash­ley Olsen’s head de­signer (and ar­guably se­cur­ing their la­bel’s cult sta­tus), Fucci is an ex­pert in de­vel­op­ing stealth lux­ury must-haves.

His pre-spring de­but at The­ory con­tains what he calls a ‘glos­sary of gar­ments for the mod­ern woman’ and he has worked to per­fect the orig­i­nal trousers, jacket and shirt de­signs that house co-founder An­drew Rosen made back in 1997.

Fine fab­ric, great fit and min­i­mal­ist styling lead Fucci’s prin­ci­ples and, as an Ital­ian liv­ing in New York, he en­joyed fo­cus­ing on some very spe­cific parts of US cul­ture. ‘I looked at Amer­i­can uni­forms of the past, like the nurse and the postal worker, as sources of in­spi­ra­tion,’ he ex­plains. ‘The uni­form has al­ways been part of The­ory’s DNA.
