FA Cup glory would help keep De Gea, says Herrera

Ander Herrera believes an FA Cup triumph would boost Manchester United’s prospects of keeping David de Gea but insisted the goalkeeper would not be able to keep producing world-class performances if he was unhappy at the club.

De Gea, who was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year last week, provided the platform for United’s last gasp 2-1 semifinal victory over Everton on Saturday with an impressive penalty save from Romelu Lukaku.

The Spaniard came close to leav- ing United last summer only for a proposed £29 million move to Real Madrid to collapse at the 11th hour, prompting him to sign a new four-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of an additional 12 months.

United supporters fear the prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification this season could force De Gea to consider his future again, but Real are thought to now be weighing up a move for Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and Herrera is adamant his friend and fellow Spaniard is content at Old Trafford.

“I think he is very happy at Manchester United,” Herrera said. “You can see that. If you are not happy in one place, you cannot play like that.

“We can be calm and optimistic, first because he is in a fantastic club and if we start winning trophies, it’s easier to keep world-class players.

“He is the No 1 in the world. In England, you know that, but in the rest of the world they think they have better goalkeepers, but I don’t think so.

“He has a special talent. When you are born with that quality and ability, you are so lucky.”
