How it works
There are six different classes of boat, but the scoring is consistent across the events. Sailors first compete in a series of 10 or 12 races, accruing points based on their finishing positions. The first boat gets one point, the second boat gets two, and so on — so the fewer points, the better. Crews are allowed to discard their worst score. The 10 boats with the lowest totals then qualify for the medal race, during which double points are awarded and added to the total score. The boat with the lowest score then wins.
