Key info

Nacra 17 makes its debut at Rio 2016, in a return for multihulls, which were dropped ahead of Beijing 2008. In the right conditions, performance catamarans are the quickest Olympic boats, with a special wave-piercing design to ensure they fly along with minimum drag. This is the first time there has been a mixed discipline in Olympic sailing programme. It also means that sailing joins tennis and badminton as one of only three sports at the Games where men and women compete directly.

Who is on Team GB?

Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves ( below), at 26 and 27 respectively, are the youngest members of the 15-strong team. But their inexperience has certainly not held them back: in June they won the Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland, the last major regatta before the Games.

Who is favourite?

Billy Besson and Marie Riou of France have enjoyed unprecedented dominance, and became the first to win all four world titles in an Olympic cycle. Spain’s Fernando Echavarri and Tara Pacheco will also be in contention.
