I used to enjoy discovering restaurants spontaneously when travelling. But such is the demand now, especially if you are eating out on a Friday or Saturday night, that you really need to do your research and book ahead. One alternative is to reserve for lunch, which is always far cheaper than the evening meal. It does take up a chunk of the day, but it works well if you enjoy going to cultural events in the evening.
