I have had a call from some­one of­fer­ing an in­vest­ment op­por­tu­nity that seems al­most too good to be true. I am a lit­tle tempted though. Should I be? FB, BERK­SHIRE

The adage “if it sounds too good to be true, it prob­a­bly is” is as worth bear­ing in mind as it ever was.

Treat any cold call­ers hawk­ing in­vest­ments with ex­treme cau­tion – the chances that they are gen­uine are neg­li­gi­ble. Scams are be­com­ing more and more so­phis­ti­cated. Even alert peo­ple get caught out. See scams­mart.fca.org. uk for some use­ful tips.
