Why won’t AIG pay for delays?

The Daily Telegraph - Your Money - - READERS’ LETTERS -

My travel insurance is with AIG and comes with my credit card. Our flight to Nice was cancelled by the airline and we stayed near the airport in a hotel the airline paid for. We travelled to Nice the next day after a delay of around 19 hours. So we did not use our pre-paid hotel room for the night in Nice. This room cost £260. Our claim has been rejected. JW, CO. DOWN.

AIG said that in such circumstances the policy would cover necessary costs incurred by you “whilst your flight was delayed”, such as overnight accommodation and meals, up to the policy limits. It said: “The Flight Delay coverage does not provide cover for any cost that may have already been incurred prior to the delayed trip, such as pre-booked accommodation.”

What this boils down to is that you did not have to pay for anything extra. I do find the small print of the policy a little confusing and have highlighted this to AIG.
