Why did Voda­fone can­cel my phone?

I have a mo­bile phone with a Voda­fone sim card. The phone is rarely used be­cause I carry it mainly for emer­gen­cies.

When I did try to make a call re­cently I was un­able to do so and, on mak­ing in­quiries at the lo­cal Voda­fone store, I was told that the num­ber had been dis­con­tin­ued be­cause a pe­riod of time had elapsed with­out the phone be­ing
