The Post Of­fice lost my tax money

In 2016 I paid a tax bill at my lo­cal Post Of­fice, which is sit­u­ated within a store near me. I handed over the com­pleted tax bill with the payslip still at­tached and paid by debit card.

I was given back the same with a re­ceipt sta­pled to it. Job done, I thought.

A few weeks later I paid an­other tax bill for the same amount.

Be­cause I had paid the bills early it wasn’t un­til some months later that I started to re­ceive let­ters from HMRC’s debt man­age­ment de­part­ment and re­alised the Post Of­fice had not paid the money into my HMRC ac­count.

A visit to the Post Of­fice re­vealed its er­rors. It had made a note in its diary that it had for­got­ten to in­clude the payslip with my pay­ment.

The Post Of­fice has apol­o­gised for its mis­take and asked me if it could keep the payslip. It omit­ted to take the payslip when em­bark­ing on the search for my sec­ond pay­ment.
