The Post Office lost my tax money
In 2016 I paid a tax bill at my local Post Office, which is situated within a store near me. I handed over the completed tax bill with the payslip still attached and paid by debit card.
I was given back the same with a receipt stapled to it. Job done, I thought.
A few weeks later I paid another tax bill for the same amount.
Because I had paid the bills early it wasn’t until some months later that I started to receive letters from HMRC’s debt management department and realised the Post Office had not paid the money into my HMRC account.
A visit to the Post Office revealed its errors. It had made a note in its diary that it had forgotten to include the payslip with my payment.
The Post Office has apologised for its mistake and asked me if it could keep the payslip. It omitted to take the payslip when embarking on the search for my second payment.
