Clinton’s ‘VP’ takes Trump on for mutual savaging
DONALD TRUMP yesterday accused Elizabeth Warren of being a “racist” and a “fraud’, after the Massachusetts senator appeared alongside his Democratic rival to call for Americans to unite against him.
Mrs Warren, a liberal favourite, took to the stage in Ohio to help give Hillary Clinton’s campaign a populist hue, while painting the presumptive Republican nominee as a selfish “money-grubber”.
In response, the tycoon raised an old controversy over whether Mrs Warren has wrongly portrayed herself as an American Indian: “She made up her heritage which I think is racist,” he said, accusing the senator of using the claim “to advance her career”.
Mr Trump once again referred to Mrs Warren as “Pocahontas”, a nickname he adopted some weeks ago that American Indian groups have denounced as offensive.
Mrs Warren, a leader of the party’s progressive wing, is a potential vicepresidential choice for Mrs Clinton and was campaigning alongside her for the first time.
Speaking in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a potential preview of a Clinton-Warren campaign team, Mrs Warren said: “We’re here to fight side-by-side with Hillary Clinton,” calling Mr Trump “a small, insecure money-grubber who fights for no one but himself ”. She added: “He will crush you into the dirt to get whatever he wants.”
