Kremlin ‘GPS jammers’ sending Uber haywire

- By Roland Oliphant

TRY ordering an Uber, chasing a Pokémon or simply checking your map while out for a stroll in central Moscow and you may run into problems.

Since this summer, Muscovites driving or walking in the centre of the city have complained about the GPS on their phones and other devices going mysteriously haywire – sometimes placing them up to 25 miles away. Now one blogger believes he has traced the source of the mysterious “teleportations” – powerful electronic warfare equipment inside the Kremlin.

Grigory Bakunov, an employee at software giant Yandex, said he managed to identify several areas of disturbance around the Kremlin. He believes that jamming devices designed to protect the fortress from drones are sending taxi drivers to the wrong address and frustrating Pokémon hunters.

The Federal Guards Service, which protects senior officials, has not commented.
