Woods enters rehab before custody battle

- By Harriet Alexander in New York

TIGER WOODS has checked himself into a rehab clinic for his addiction to prescription painkillers as he attempts to retain custody of his two children.

Woods, 41, was recently arrested in the early hours of the morning, slumped at the wheel of his car with the engine running near his Florida home.

The winner of 14 golf majors was described by police as “very dopey”, barely able to keep his eyes open and walk or speak. He tested negative for alcohol, but told police he had taken the sedative Xanax. He later admitted he was also taking the powerful pain- killer Vicodin.

Woods apologised for his behaviour and promised to seek treatment.

The former world number one had surgery on his back earlier this year and is struggling to recover.

In an effort to retain joint custody of his daughter Sam, nine, and eightyear-old son Charlie, the golfer has reportedly agreed to attend a 28-day course of treatment at a centre near his home in Jupiter.
