Bride-to-be died as she refused to leave parents

- By Helena Horton

A YOUNG bride-to-be died in the Grenfell Tower fire after refusing to leave her elderly parents, according to her cousin.

Hosna Begum, 22, and her brothers, Hanif, 26, and Hamid, 29, refused to leave their mother, Rabeya, and father, Kamru Miah, who was 82, during the deadly fire.

They perished in their flat on the 17th floor as flames raged around them, their cousin Samir Ahmad, 18, told The Times.

“They stayed with their mum and dad,” he said. “Family was so important to them. They lived together and they died together. Their dad could barely walk anyway. What were they going to do? Abandon him? My auntie spoke to Hanif. He was very calm. He said his time had come, and not to mourn for them, but be happy for them because they would be in a better place. Hats off to them. They didn’t show cowardice.”

He said the family made their last phone call at 3.10am.

Abdul Khan, another cousin in the family, said that Hosna was due to be married in three weeks.

He said: “My uncle said ‘I’m going, forgive me if I’ve been offensive to anyone’.

“He was on the phone to some relatives for three hours – the blaze was still going down and firefighters and fire crew were struggling to save as many people as they can, but it was beyond their control.”

At least 79 people died in the fire last Wednesday morning.
