People who use social media were shocked (or in some cases, no doubt, entertained) by footage of a fat man wearing no shirt involved in a brawl at Royal Ascot. Yet 70,000 were at the race meeting, all but a few unaware that any fracas occurred. Ascot is a stylish venue, but any horse race is deeply democratic, popular with all classes. The wonder is that a good time is had by all, and prodigious amounts of drink taken, with scarcely a policeman to be seen. The same is true of Henley Royal Regatta or the rather different annual landmark of Glastonbury, where 135,000 lovers of the loud attract little attention from the custodians of the law. Goodness knows, the police have had a hard time of it in recent weeks. Happily though, we British are seldom so peaceably engaged as in enjoying the social events of summer.
