There is one other warning from history for the All Blacks as they seek to avoid an upset against the Lions. In 1899, the touring side to Australia lost the first Test in Sydney 13-3. They then had almost a month to reflect on where they went wrong, with captain and tour manager Matthew Mullineux (below), who was also a chaplain, taking the decision to drop himself from the starting XV. The radical plan worked: the Lions won the second Test in Brisbane 11-0 and then closed out the series 3-1 with two more victories in Sydney.
