A GENERAL STRIKE.
ROTTERDAM, Tuesday (5.10 p.m.).
All the workers at the Maatschappy Nederland and two groups of the building trade struck work at midday, and formed a procession to the Burgomaster, who received a deputation. The deputation declared that, owing to a sufficiency of food being withheld, they considered themselves no longer capable of doing heavy work. They demanded better feeding, not on paper, but on the table. They were now preparing a general strike, and demanded to be allowed to pass along the streets unhindered by the police or the military. The Burgomaster replied that the authorities were doing their utmost to relieve the difficulties, but order must and would be maintained. Therefore, he had prohibited all processions.
