The land of King Arthur should pay no tribute

-

SIR – In the matter of the proposed “Brexit bill” and any subsequent payments to the EU, Theresa May and her ministers should take the example of King Arthur.

According to No 51 of the ancient (probably sixth century) Welsh Triads of Britain, the European authorities sent to Arthur at Caerleon to demand the same level of tribute that had been previously paid. The Triad says: “This is the answer that Arthur gave to the Emperor’s messengers, that the men of Rome had no greater claim to tribute from the men of this island than the men of the island of Britain had from them.”

SIR – I notice that Chris Huhne, the journalist and former politician, has joined others in claiming that “people didn’t vote to get poorer” when they voted to leave the EU.

This is a not true. The Government’s booklet was crystal clear on that point – households could expect their income to fall by £4,300 per annum. Some 17.4million people noted that warning and still voted to leave the EU. They just want the political classes to get on with it. Keith Phair

SIR – Sir Vince Cable was happy to be re-elected to Parliament with a 52 per cent share of the vote; yet he cannot accept a national vote of 52 per cent for Brexit.
