Passport-less Iraqi left UK using driving licence
An Iraqi who had been ordered not to leave the country slipped away on a Eurostar train using just his driving licence, a High Court judge has said.
The man’s passport had been seized and ports and airports put on alert, Mr Justice Holman said. But he had travelled through Europe using a driving licence to prove his identity, then obtained an emergency travel document at the Iraqi embassy in Germany before going to Kurdistan.
The man had been at the centre of a family court dispute with his estranged wife over their two sons. He had taken the children to Kurdistan, and left them with members of his family without their mother’s agreement, then returned to Britain.
