Out for a dove
SIR – I saw the Australian batsman Paul Reiffel account for two pigeons at the Oval in 1993 (Letters, August 2).
One unfortunate bird was hit close to the boundary when a shot sped to the rope for four runs. The second was hit in mid-flight by a towering shot by Reiffel. The ball knocked the poor bird out of the sky. It fell to the grass and was carried to the boundary where it too was found to be lifeless.
It’s a dangerous life for any cricketloving pigeon. Philip Paine
