Pipe dream?

Early morning walkers on Norfolk’s Winterton Beach couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw what had washed ashore. Twelve sections of a giant pipe, one almost half a kilometre (1,500ft) long, broke free from Norwegian tugs bound for an Algerian power plant after an accident with an Icelandic container ship. Workers were waiting for high tide to tow the pipes back offshore to the north of Lowestoft, where remedial work will be carried out before they are returned to the manufactur­ers in Norway.
