University sticks its oar in to beer garden plans
CAMBRIDGE University is in a planning dispute with Wetherspoons after it objected to a pub beer garden.
Bosses at The Regal pub in Cambridge submitted plans to demolish a “little-used” staff car park at the rear to build a larger beer garden.
The pub, which is the largest in the city, is often used by students, but university chiefs have submitted a letter to Cambridge City Council opposing the plans. It states noise issues, parking problems and an “increased number of inebriated patrons” would disrupt studies at its nearby Language Centre.
DV Architects, acting on behalf of Wetherspoons, said the beer garden would “improve the customer experience” and create a “much improved customerfocused environment”.
Locals called the university “snooty”, saying the beer garden would be “well used” by its students. Charliefoxtrot23 wrote online: “Snooty university wants people to stop having fun – typical.”
