May fights on

- George Burne Steve Baldock Nick Denton

SIR – Theresa May’s announcement that she plans to stay on and fight the next general election (report, August 31) is but another example of her lack of judgment and political nous.

It will undoubtedly stir up those who are dissatisfied with her in the Conservative Party, doing it further damage. She should stick to her job and retire gracefully at an appropriate moment.

Woldingham, Surrey

SIR – It is splendid news that Mrs May wants to fight the next election.

The sad thing is that she barely bothered to fight the last one.

Handcross, West Sussex

SIR – Doesn’t the fact that Mrs May nearly lost a general election to Jeremy Corbyn, who was initially thought to have no chance, tell her something about how likely she is to succeed?

Moreover, the Tories need a leader who is truly enthusiastic about Brexit – in contrast to Mrs May, who sees it merely as an instruction to carry out. She has also neglected domestic reforms, such as lowering taxes, which would energise the economy.
