FAUX PAS(T)

- LA

From plastic anoraks at Burberry and Emporio Armani and flesh-coloured knee socks at Anya Hindmarch to ice-white T-bar shoes at Emilia Wickstead, there was a fingernail-on-blackboard impulse running through many of these shows. A model at Erdem could be wearing the most exquisite brocade ballgown, inspired by no less a taste arbiter than the Queen, only to find her feet encased in sheer black pop socks.

Not everyone will be so literal when they wear these outfits in real life.

But the brave and the hardy will relish all those little details that used to be no-nos.

Speaking of socks, they’re a whole new category waiting to catch fire this winter (move over mini-bags, last year’s star performer).

From Isa Arfen’s Japanese-style socks, worn with chopines, to Preen’s ribbed silk socks and Burberry’s

Argyle versions, they’re a shortcut to contemporary relevance.

And warmth.
