Police called out every week to mobility scooter incident

♦ Police have warned mobility scooter riders to obey traffic rules after revealing they have been called to one incident a week for the past five years.

Disabled drivers in Cumbria have knocked over five pedestrians, including a child, and been in 54 “highways disruptions” and 14 “road-related offences” including scooters colliding with other vehicles.

There have been 347 recorded incidents in the county involving the 8mph vehicles in the last five years, according to a Freedom of Information response. A force spokesman said: “We ask that mobility scooter users give way to pedestrians when riding on pavements and that they obey traffic lights and all other road signs. Also, we encourage scooter users to wear hi-visibility clothing, particularly at night and consider adding reflective strips to the vehicle.

“Our advice is for both motorists and scooter users to look out for one another.”
