‘Bag checks used to raise takings’
THEATRES are using terror threat security searches as an excuse to boost bar takings by ensuring drinks are not brought in, an award-winning producer has suggested.
Richard Jordan said he was concerned that theatres were being heavyhanded and could deter audiences.
Writing for The Stage, Mr Jordan says he felt uncomfortable about the level of security. He said: “It may serve as reassurance but I think bag checks are also about stopping soft drinks being brought in. I would hate to think that terrorism is used as an excuse to help boost takings.”
A spokesman for the Society of London Theatre, which represents producers, owners and managers, said: “We fundamentally disagree. Security checks are in place to ensure the safety of customers and staff. Customers with concerns are advised to contact the venue box office.”
