Bish­ops deny abor­tion stance is ‘un­re­al­is­tic’

Bish­ops have crit­i­cised a Catholic jour­nal for sug­gest­ing that a strict pro-life stance is “un­re­al­is­tic”.

The Tablet pub­lished an ed­i­to­rial say­ing it would be “re­al­is­tic” for Catholics to ac­cept that abor­tion should be “le­gal, safe – and rare”.

How­ever, the Bishop of Shrews­bury, the Right Rev Mark Davies, said: “The teach­ing of the [Catholic] Church could not be clearer in af­firm­ing that every hu­man life must be re­spected and pro­tected ab­so­lutely from the mo­ment of con­cep­tion.”

The Right Rev John Sher­ring­ton, the Aux­il­iary Bishop of West­min­ster, said the Church’s work “can help to bet­ter pro­tect the child in the womb”.
