Jealous lover set £450,000 yacht adrift
A jealous boat owner took “completely unreasonable” revenge on a millionaire love rival by setting his yachts adrift, a court has heard.
David Taylor, 54, was convinced his girlfriend of five weeks Hannah Brookes, 26, was having a fling with fellow boat owner Mike Hay, 58.
After a row in a Newcastle bar, Ms Brookes stormed out and Taylor followed her to Mr Hay’s yacht, where he claims he saw through a porthole that she was performing a sex act on him. They both denied the claims.
In a rage, he cut through ropes and electrical cables that were securing the £450,000 Sealine 38 vessel Coco to the city’s Quayside, sending it down the Tyne on the high tide.
Taylor then cut away a second boat owned by Mr Hay, the Vortex, which drifted a mile down the river, smashing into jetties, pontoons and other vessels, causing £11,490 damage.
Yesterday he was handed a ninemonth jail term suspended for 18 months by Newcastle magistrates after admitting criminal damage.
