The rescue mission followed a tip-off by US intelligence that militants from the Haqqani network were bringing the hostages over the Afghan border.

Donald Trump yesterday hailed the rescue, saying that the Pakistan government “are starting to respect the United States again”.

The couple were due to be repatriated, but according to NBC, yesterday declined to board an American military aircraft heading out of Pakistan.

A spokesman for the US embassy declined to comment.
