Reaping the benefits

-

SIR – I first used a scythe more than 70 years ago.

I have a proper, beautifully made scythe that is more than 100 years old. It has a 3ft blade – unlike the Scandinavian sickle I saw Monty Don use recently on Gardeners’ World – and it glides gently over the ground, cutting everything before it.

It is vital to keep the blade really sharp by regular use of a stone. It is important not to try to cut too much in one go, and to build up a steady, relaxing swing if you hope to tackle a whole field or paddock.

It is very satisfying and keeps you fit, too. David J Hartshorn
