Gynaecologist groped midwife, tribunal told
A CONSULTANT gynaecologist sexually assaulted a midwife as she delivered twin babies, a medical tribunal has heard.
Khaled Ismail, 49, an obstetrician and gynaecologist based at the University of Birmingham, is accused of stroking the legs of victims, grabbing their bottoms and rubbing up against four medics.
The professor groped a string of junior female colleagues in the belief his “confidence, arrogance and seniority” would stop them reporting him for sexual misconduct, a hearing at the General Medical Council heard yesterday.
Four unnamed women felt “vulnerable and embarrassed” by his fondling and were too scared to speak out due to his position, it was said.
But he was ordered to face a disciplinary hearing after a PHD student told how he ran his little finger up and down her thigh. Tom Forster, for the General Medical Council, said: “Dr Ismail, a very senior and highly respected professor, pursued a course of behaviour in which he intentionally touched four colleagues.”
One midwife was delivering twins when the incident allegedly happened. The alleged incidents occurred between 2013 and 2015 whilst the Egyptian-born consultant was working at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. Dr Ismail, of Market Drayton, Shrops, denies misconduct. The hearing continues.
