Orphaned otter pup recovering

-

A tiny otter pup that fell 15ft in a sewage works storm tank has been rescued by the RSPCA.

The animal – weighing in at just 2.6lb – was pulled to safety by a worker at the plant near Stowmarket, Suffolk.

The pup was then collected by an RSPCA officer and rushed to the charity’s East Winch Centre in Norfolk. With no sign of the otter’s mother, the animal was totally flat and extremely weak, leading officers to fear it would not make the journey.

However, after receiving fluids and time under a heat lamp, the pup was much more lively, and encouragingly attempting to bite the fingers of staff.

Alison Charles, manager at East Winch, said: “It’s really positive that he’s now eating but he’s not out of the woods yet.” RSPCA officers aim to fully build up the animal’s strength and health with the aim to hopefully release it back into the wild next year. Samantha Herbert
