Endangered porpoise ‘saved’ by Mexico dies
Mexico’s efforts to save the critically endangered vaquita, the world’s smallest porpoise, suffered a major blow when one of just 30 creatures thought left in the wild died soon after authorities caught it in order to transfer it to a protected marine reserve.
The vaquita has been pushed to the brink of extinction by illegal gillnet fishing and authorities initially welcomed the six-month-old porpoise’s capture, before it “suffered complications” and deteriorated.
