Deep coat pockets beat carrying a handbag

-

sir – I learnt as a teenager, going racing with my father, that a coat with big pockets was preferable to a handbag (report, November 2).

Not only was it safer, but he also taught me to put my betting money in one pocket and my winnings in the other and never mix the two.

It left my hands free for the binoculars, too.

Though it was sound advice in itself, I suspect that the wise old codger got fed up with holding my bag for me.

Indeed, he once absent-mindedly wandered off and carried the thing to the paddock with him. I prefer roomy pockets to this day.

sir – Ever since my handbag was pulled off my shoulder by a robber I have used a so-called bum bag.

Your fashion pages recently recognised the worth of this invention (Style, October 21). It is much more secure than pockets, which women’s clothes seldom feature. It deserves a better name. Mary Sutherland
