Climber near death traced to alpine crevasse

A Ger­man moun­taineer was res­cued in the Aus­trian Alps af­ter be­ing trapped in a crevasse for five days.

The 45-year-old, named only as Hen­ning K, be­came trapped af­ter a 60ft fall as he neared the summit of the 7,500ft Dach­stein moun­tain. He was about to en­ter fa­tal hy­pother­mia, when res­cuers found him af­ter a po­lice of­fi­cer no­ticed calls had been made to the lo­cal emer­gency num­ber with­out prop­erly con­nect­ing – and traced them back to the stricken climber’s phone.
