Swimsuit will always haunt Mordaunt

According to one tabloid newspaper’s profile article yesterday, our new International Development Secretary “wore swimsuits” for her appearance in ITV’S reality television series, Splash!

This seems an odd accusation to level at Penny Mordaunt since (a) fairly hard pictorial evidence corroborating the fact was “splashed” across most papers yesterday; (b) the show in question featured a slew of “celebrities”, including the 44-year-old blonde frontbencher being taught to dive by Olympian Tom Daley; and (c) had she worn her usual Hobbs trouser suit and Whistles pumps to work that day, those forward flips would have been notably harder to pull off.

And yet there’s likely to be a lot more talk of this regrettable “swimsuit-wearing” period in Mordaunt’s past. Because she evidently missed the memo about never doing reality TV shows at the start of one’s career, “always, always when you’re on the way out”.

Meanwhile, whether she’s of a higher calibre than Priti Patel, or indeed able to help the country make some of its biggest decisions since the war, remains to be seen.
