A film in which chilling silence speaks volumes
SIR – To all those who can’t stand background music in films (report, November 14), I should like to commend Lady Macbeth, directed by William Oldroyd.
Oldroyd’s sound design team (Dan Jones and Ben Baird) relied on footsteps and natural sounds to create the chilling atmosphere of this re-telling of Nicholai Leskov’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.
Actress Florence Pugh did the rest. It has been nominated for awards. Maybe it will start a fashion. Don Carleton
