US se­na­tor steps down amid sex abuse claims

Se­na­tor Al Franken is re­sign­ing from the US se­nate fol­low­ing a se­ries of sex­ual mis­con­duct al­le­ga­tions.

Mr Franken, 66, who rep­re­sents Min­nesota, was en­cour­aged to re­sign as Democrats sought to main­tain the moral high ground af­ter al­le­ga­tions against Roy Moore, the Repub­li­can se­nate can­di­date in Alabama.

Mr Franken, who did not ad­mit any guilt dur­ing his res­ig­na­tion speech, said: “There is some irony that I am leav­ing while a man who has bragged on tape about his his­tory of sex­ual as­sault now sits in the Oval Of­fice.”
